Winding It Down

School starts on Friday (?) August 19th. Why a Friday, I do not know. I was driving by the high school yesterday and on the marquee, it said "Picture Day is August 19th. Wear your best." Soooo, picture day is the FIRST day of school? (at least at the high school). That seems odd.

Won't they have many other things going on, like class schedules and locker assignments, etc.? Of course, I hear nothing from the middle school, so lord only knows if they are also doing picture day on the first day.

Luckily, there is a meeting at the Elementary school - from 2 to 3 pm on August 18th for the new Kindergarten kids to meet their teachers. I don't know about you, but I like to be more prepared than having less than 24 hours to get my child ready for a new school and routine.

We'll be going out today for back to school clothing and whatever. Around here, we have so many families who live below the poverty level, the schools in this county are not allowed to assign a list of needed items (some kids families' can't afford it, yadda, yadda, yadda.) But, I like to send Buddy with a decent backpack, a binder, paper, pencils and a few other things.

For Sissy, she'll need a backpack and probably not much else - pencils, perhaps.

I'll also pick up supplies I know all teachers need, like tissues, hand sanitizer, and an assortment of pencils and erasers.

I'm looking forward to the new school year - especially for Sissy. She'll be in class for a full day, 5 days a week. I hope she enjoys it. She's excited to start, but that attitude may change when she realizes Mommy will be away for 7 or so hours.

Oh, well. They gotta grow up sometime.

I have so many things to do, maybe I'll catch up (at least somewhat)next week. This will be the first time since Buddy was half way through 2nd grade that I will be alone most of the day. That's fine with me. You all know I enjoy solitude and I get SO much more accomplished if I don't have distractions.

Shoot! I'm already working on my "To Do" list! This OCD person enjoys a structured routine with a little downtime mixed in for good measure. Plus, I like to meet up with friends for lunch every now and then for kid-free meals! It's been more than 5 years since I've had more than a handful of actual hot meals.

It's time to wake Buddy up - his days of sleeping late are closing in on him - and get myself ready for a busy day.

Hope all my hooligans have a wonderful Tuesday! If you're not on my Facebook, I have a new motto in life: Have a happy heart and a good attitude. I'm trying to live that, and I hope you will, too.

We could all use a bit more happiness in life, right?

Love,

  1. Picture day is the first day of school?!? That seems nutty! My daughter is going into her sophomore year...they already sent out the schedules and a list of what they need to buy is online. And that list is LONG. I routinely spend over $100 on school supplies each year...and that's for just one kid! What happened to the days of just needing a pencil for school?

  2. School starts so darn early for you! We don't go back until after Labor Day.

I remember you mentioned last year about the school not having a list of needed supplies because of the poverty. That just blows my mind still. I looked at the list my sister gave her class and it included Clorox wipes and Fantastic spray. She will have a clean classroom!
