Saturday Shenanigans

The Evil Twin and I are having company over tonight. The Evil Twin is in the kitchen working on his extra special chili. After that gets going on the stove, he's going to run to the store for a few odds n ends.

I'll finish cleaning up the house.

We're excited because this couple who is coming to visit have been friends of ours for a very long time. In fact, I met T in college. After we graduated, she met D and they became a couple. They are unmarried by choice and they are childless by choice. But, they have been a solid couple for almost 17 years now. They're super cool and great with our kids - very patient... something that I lack at times.

Anyway, it's T's 40th birthday tomorrow, so we'll have a surprise cake for her.

It should be a good time. Plus, we're going to make another attempt at fire starting...LOL. We were a little intimidated after our first (failed) attempt. I guess there's a learning curve for everything.

Growing up, my dad always had cozy fires going. He had mastered the art of it, but I never observed him. I should have. He taught me lots of things, but that wasn't part of it and he passed away before I got my own house with a fireplace (or more technically speaking: he saw this house - he just didn't live long enough for me to have the fireplaces cleaned and then have a chance to show me how it works).

So, it promises to be a full and fun day.

I might have to have a little snack to tide me over until CHILI time! Yum!

  1. remember with the fire.. build from small to large. once you get a good small fire going it'll be able to eat any of the wood you put on it.

and what's in the special chili? is it like mine where i put in a bunch of chipotles in adobo sauce?

  2. Awww, how nice. I love to entertain - I miss the days when we had friends over. I guess the fact that we don't smoke and have children are a turn-off to them...
    Have fun!!

  4. Oh.... well I guess I won't show up because you have company... I like chili... Maybe I'll go visit Laura, well she has this restraining order now. Sigh... I'll just stay home.

  7. Hope you had a great time. You should do what I did with the fire, convert to gas...all I do is turn a switch. But I'm lazy like that. I can however build one hell of a campfire.

  9. Mmmmm... special chili! And isn't there something really sexy about men who cook? I'm just saying... :P

Yay for visiting friends! I love having friends over. All my friends have kids and are on as crazy schedules as I am, so it doesn't happen as often as I like, but it's definitely fun when it does.

I'd like to do a chili nosh the evening before T'giving. Depends on how Dad's doing, tho.

He did crack me up today when he bellowed, "Janis! What the hell is a DAMN BLACKBERRY?!"

  14. I'm an absolute guru of fire - can't call myself a pyro until I actually burn down a building or something, but still... :)

Split kindling to get it started. It doesn't have to be super-small, but maybe about 2" square. Stack them in a criss-cross pattern over top of a good firestarter. Remember that air is probably the most important thing when starting it - don't stack too much wood together. 3 or 4 criss-crossed layers should be good, depending on the size of your fireplace. Once the kindling is going well, drop a log on top - you're off & running...

A soft blanket & bottle of massage oil on the floor in front of it will help it heat up as well... ;)
