Speechless Wednesday

I'm sorry I don't have much for you today.

I found out this morning that a friend from college passed away on Sunday. She was 41. She lived a couple doors down from my roommate and I when we lived in Twin Towers at Marshall University.

The three of us, sometimes with her roommate, too, would run around and get into trouble. She was so sweet. I hadn't heard from her since college, but she often popped into my mind.

I had asked another mutual friend about her a few years ago and knew that she was living about 2 hours away, but still in WV. She had a husband, son and daughter.

She was teeny-tiny petite, but had a laugh that was as big as all outdoors. And, she said the funniest things all the time.

Some of the best memories I have of college include her.

Her parents still live in the same town she grew up and that is where I live now. There will be a celebration of her life at our parish church this evening. But, her memorial service and burial will be in the area where she has been living for many years.

At this point, they think she may have had a heart attack, but she's in autopsy. It might have been an aneurysm. Who knows? But 41? Really? And this is a sweet little gal who was physically fit...I guess we never know when it'll be our time.

Even though I hadn't been in touch with her for years, she frequently popped into my head - remembering some crazy thing we had done together or just hanging out in the dorms.

I've been reeling since I heard the news. Sorry this entry isn't funny or interesting, but it's what's on my mind and probably what will be on my mind all day.

  1. Sorry to hear about your friend. It's strange how a person can be such a part of your life and even though you've not had contact for years they still are in your thoughts years later. My thoughts go out to you and to her family in these difficult times.

  3. So sorry to hear about your friend. It is both sad a scary when we lose someone so young.

I guess since my mom and her brother passed young, I am always very aware of the fact that people can die at any point. I live my life big and extreme and don't put too much stock into waiting/saving for a rainy day that I may never see.

  4. I'm sorry to hear about your friend. We don't have to have them in our lives daily or even often to feel that mark they left on us. HUGS.

Absolutely gobsmacked I've made it to 52.

41 though. Not fair is it?

  7. It is amazing the way that some people touch our lives in such a way that they are in our minds often even when you haven't seen them in a long time. For people like this their loss can feel like you just spoke to them yesterday.

Just remember to keep all those good memories in your heart and to live each day to the fullest.

  10. Once you bond with someone it doesn't matter how much time goes by - it still stings when they pass away. I know the feeling...

    Sorry about your loss, ETW.

  11. It's when a tragedy such as this happens to someone so young that it makes you question your own mortality.
She was your dear friend, perhaps not like you once were but time nor distance ever changes all the great times you guys had together...it's good that you still have those and are able to cherish them forever. I'm sure she will not only be missed by her family but you and all the others that she touched.
    So sorry for your loss.

  19. Dear Lady ETW,

You never have to be funny and interesting. Just in your present moment, and that is well enough.

I hold your hand in this time of sorrow, even though we don't know each other. It is so absolutely confusing and terrible when one is blind-sided by such a loss. It makes one fear the phone.

I just read The Elegance of a Hedgehog and one of the book's most enlightening moments is at the time of a character's death. She reflects on how she will so miss the people she knows, loves and has loved.

If there was a moment of consciousness like that for your friend, I am quite sure you were in her thoughts, as she will be in yours for a long time to come.

    with affection,

    XuXu
