It's That Time of the Year!

It has finally warmed up enough around this hellhole for me to plant a few victims and see how they fare.

Yesterday, at the Mart of Wal, I picked up 2 tomato plants, 2 strawberry plants and 2 tomato cages. Last year, the Evil Twin talked me out of the cages (which were only $2.50 each) and we had tomato plants going every which way! We tried to stake them, but those suckers get heavy when they start producing the fruit.

I'm all a twitter with excitement with my new purchases.

I know it seems a little late in the season to plant now, but - trust me - they would have died of frost if I had done this earlier. Soooo, I'm going to get a few more supplies, plant my goods, fertilize, water, and see how things go. I always get so happy when I do this.

It's the possibility of growing something really cool mixed with a touch of anxiety that things won't pan out as I'd like.

We do live in an area where woodland critters run amok. I try to trick them to stay away by a variety of means including spraying the plants with a mixture of crushed red pepper and water. I also add an end of a pantyhose with human hair in it and this year, we're attempting to also grow marigolds around the edible plants. I've heard the smell of marigolds is enough to drive off most of the pesky scavengers.

I'm considering posting a photo of Flatimir, like a warning label: "You eat at my garden and perhaps you will end up dead in our shed."

This weekend looks good to clean out my little planting area and get started. There will be plenty of boring garden pictures along the way, so stay tuned for that! I know it's hard to wait for all that adventure, but you'll just have to be patient.

Happy Thursday, hooligans!

  1. Have fun Evil. Oh how I miss my yard. The thing about marigolds is accurate. I used to plant them around my garden and they would keep the rabbits out. The little fuckers ate all my sunflower buds one year when I didn't plant marigolds. Cheers!!

  2. We had the first fruits of our garden this morning. And our first casualty. We had our first banana pepper and one of our upside down tomato plants broke off in the wind and rain last night. It was so sad cause there were already little green tomatoes on it. A tomato life cut short. So sad.

  3. LOL... I'm voting for a ring of stakes with a variety of woodland creatures impaled upon them. Soon there would be rumors of the house on the hill spreading amongst the woodland creatures and muttering whispers of a curse and accusations of consorting with kittens....

  6. Good luck! We are already too hot here for me to plant anything new.

That and I'm really good and sending green things to heaven.

  7. I hope you have better luck than I always have. I’m like the black death to anything green.

But it is fun to try...

  8. I have 2 hanging flower baskets on the balcony this year. They are fairing way better than plantys normally do around me.

I really wish we had the space for maters. I love fresh tomatoes!!!!

  9. I'm putting my tomatoes in this weekend, but then again, I live where it's frozen most of the year, so it's just the right timing for me. Garlic works in keeping the critters at bay, also.

  10. Mothballs around the parameters of the property can also help keep the critters at bay.

  12. I *soooooo* want to plant food this year. Husband would never "allow" it at the house. I might have to visit the Evil Empire and see what they have that I could container garden ...

  13. Our fruit trees are actually going to do something this year I think....we might get some veggie plants this weekend...it has rained for 9 days straight without stop. Had I planted anything it would have floated to your garden by now.

  15. I have heard that about Marigolds as well. Sadly, I have not touched my garden (all flowers) except to weed once. My perennials are coming up beautifully but I definitely need some color in there!

Hope the tomatos and strawberries turn out great!

  16. i planted my garden over memorial day weekend. i planted 32 tomato plants plus zucchini, yellow squash, brussel sprouts, cucumbers, green peppers, red peppers, jalapeno peppers and banana peppers. The only casualties so far are two of the cucumber plants shriveled up and died. I also planted another flat of strawberries in the strawberry bed. As soon as one ripens the kids eat them. I keep the critters away with a Savage 17 HMR!
