Willy Wonka

The school district called another 2 hour delay, which means Sissy doesn't have preschool again today. So, we are snuggling in and watching Willy Wonka (the original one with Gene Wilder). In my mind, Gene will always be THE Willy Wonka. It's like watching the film, Romeo and Juliet, directed by Franco Zeffirelli, then having to watch the same movie with Leo DiCaprio (which, in all honesty, I haven't seen it - I could smell the stench vapors coming from the trailer on TV).

I've probably seen this movie 100 times or more and if I ever see it on, I'll sit down and watch it again.

The thing is: with each viewing, I notice something I hadn't noticed before.

Do you have any movies like that? Off the top of my head, I can list this one and Coal Miner's Daughter, with Sissy Spacek. There's just something about that movie that gets me every time. And, I do love Loretta Lynn.

The Evil Twin's big draw - even though he thinks it's stupid - is Grease, and I'm sure a few others he could watch over and over again.

And with that, I bid you a good day, Sir!

Happy Tuesday, hooligans!

Love,

  2. The one movie that comes to mind is The Princess Bride. I love this movie and could watch it everyday and never get sick of it.

  3. As much as I love Johnny Depp, Gene Wilder is the one and only Willy Wonka.

The Big Chill, The Philadelphia Story and The Breakfast Club are three movies I've seen about a thousand times each, and would happily sit through a thousand times yet again.

  4. Gene Wilder cannot be outdone as Willy Wonka. The part was made for him in my humble opinion.

  5. Mstt-Man - Those are all really great!

Jennifer - Believe it or not, my brother in law loves that movie to distraction as well. :-)

Jennifer2 - I love Breakfast Club. That's also one that sucks me in every time. :-)

Ron - I knew there was a reason I love you so. I totally agree!

  6. To clarify - Grease is my "guilty pleasure." It's so inane that I can't not watch it, much like 80s WWF Wrestling - junk entertainment of the worst kind (but still entertaining). My repeat-viewing list is stuff like The Tin Drum, El Topo, Fargo, Goodfellas, Midnight Cowboy, My Life As A Dog, Lust In the Dust, Clockwork Orange, Taxi Driver, Pelle the Conqueror, the Last Detail, Bride of Frankenstein, King Kong (orig.), Santa Sangre, Seven Samurai, Into the West, The Wild Bunch, Raging Bull, Werkmeister Harmonies, Calvaire, Full Metal Jacket and about 200 more...

  7. Not to worry ET, I watch "Grease" whenever it's on too. Hell, I even watch "Grease II"

There's a long list of movies I've seen many, many times. Movies like "Office Space" "Rio Bravo" "Big Jake" Outlaw Josey Wales" "Goodfellas" "Casino" "Ronin" and well, pretty much any gangster movie and lots and lots of comedies. Also classics like "Casablanca" "The Cain Mutiny" and "Giant"

I could go on and on.

  8. LOVE the 1968 Romeo and Juliet! Masterpiece!

Hate Willy Wonka. That film literally nauseates me.

  9. The Leonardo DiCaprio Romeo and Juliet is one of the biggest steaming piles of crap I have ever had the misfortune to watch. I actually still have a hard time watching any of his movies.

  10. I only saw WIllie Wonka recently because I didn't watch movies with little people when I was younger (they totally freaked me out). I still have to see Wizard of Oz at some point.

I don't care for the Johnny Depp remake. I don't like him although people love him.

  11. ET - Honey, I knew you would have a mile long list! :-)

    Jay - Great movies!

LBB - Really? The Willy Wonka with Gene Wilder? Maybe I was younger when it caught me with its' booger hooks....

K - I knew it! Sorry you lost 2 hours of your life on it.

  12. Karen - I'm just the opposite - I'm fascinated by little people, always have been. I think you'll love Wizard of Oz.

  13. I could and have watched the Matrix over and over again. It's a fantastic hangover movie...much better than The Hangover.

Twelve Monkey's and Minority report and The Usual Suspects are movies that always have something new to me when I watch them though.

The original Willy Wonka is so much better. It always scared me as a kid though about the fat kid getting stuck in the tube.

  14. I have a long, random list of go to movies.

My favorites are currently The Expendables, The Hangover, Falling Down, Office Space, Clueless...and all of the Transporter movies.

My all-time go-to movie, however, is Bruce Campbell vs. the Army of Darkness. I LOVE BC. LOVE him.
