The Ink

Warren asked for a pic of the tattoos yesterday. I know I've posted them in the past, but I've also picked up a few new readers since I first started this addiction blogging business.

This is my left thigh if you're wondering. Above the knee. :-)

I know it looks like one tattoo, but there are actually 3 done at 3 different times. My first one was the lizard inside the circle. I went to Ohio to get that one done, because tattooing was illegal around here at the time.

I love reptiles and have owned many different types of reptiles: mostly lizards, but a few snakes. I even had a pet tarantula and scorpion (I know they're not reptiles, but they are unusual pets!).

I know, artistically, this is not the best tattoo, but it has become a part of me over the years. I had it done when I was 21. I went back to the same shop in Ohio a few months later and had the rose done.

The idea for this would be that the stem of the rose would appear to go behind the circle and come out below the circle with thorns and a couple of blood drops.

I had that for a while and I got tired of people asking what the bottom part was (the end stem of the rose with the blood drops).

A year or two later, there was a tattoo convention in Pittsburgh. I gathered up a few friends and made a hotel reservation.

That's when I had the tribal work done (the black work) to cover the former tattoo of the end of the rose stem.

And now, I no longer have to explain that little bit to people.

I would like one more tattoo - preferably something on my upper right arm. We'll see. I'm still thinking about it.

  1. Its a great tat. And its unique, as most tattoos should be. And it means something to you, not just a trendy thing to you.

  4. Although I never had one done on myself and believe me , I've had plenty of opportunity being a sailor and all, I like the art work. Excellent choice, and as Voyeur36 stated, it should never be a trend because gonna have to live with it for the rest of your life. I wonder what Angelina Jolie did with her tat of Bruce Willis? Probably had it covered ya think?

  5. Nice! Great cover up, never would have guessed there was something else there!

I have a flower on my lower back (yes..the tramp stamp) and it hurt like a mother..originally I was going to have it done in two installments, get the flower and then add the vines and leaves. It hurt to damn bad so I never went back..ya, that's right I'm a big ol' sissy!!!

  6. Nice! I have never had the...uh...well, the nerve to get a tattoo but I surely dig seeing them on other people...so long as the other people aren't my grandma or my kids. Anyhow, thanks for showing them!

  7. I have 4. 1 is my intials and the other 3 are animals (you know, the zoology degree and all). I have a butterfly on my stomach that has since stretched to gargantuan proportions. I got it the day after I graduated high school when I was a really skinny.

I have a sea turtle on my left shoulder and a frog sitting on a mushroom smoking a joint (yeah, I was a genius at 18)! My next one is going to be an otter in the middle of upper back. I told The Husband that is the first thing I am doing when he gets deployed again! ;)

Yours is very nice though. And it is important to have ones that mean something to you!

  8. Very nice tattoo! I have two myself, an egyptian ankh on my right back hip - I had that done when I was 25 - and a small bluebird behind my left ear (done this past March). The bluebird is in memorial to my mom and my hair covers it for the most part. I like the fact that most people can't see my tattoos unless I make an effort to show them.

  13. Umm... needle, blood, pain... not for this big fat chicken. Wait a minute... I'm having a baby in a few weeks! I better re-think that!

  14. I love tattoos, but I hate hate hate needles. I used to pass out when the doc would just do a finger stick then use those tiny glass tubes to magically suck up just a few drops of blood. I puked on the jeweler when I got my ears pierced (ya had to go to the jewelry story for that in those days) and I dropped the hand mirror and was on my way to passing out when I got my ears pierced the second time.

Curmy's got a ton of tats. On the upper arm, if you go with an armband try to do it at the least sweaty parts of the year because a hot day of heavy sweating close to getting it done can leave you with some seriously blurred parts under your arm. He got his first armband in Hawaii. It's blurry from a mixture of sweat and sunscreen.

  15. I never would of guessed that you had even 1 tattoo! That is so cool though. I have 5 that look like 3! I should do a post like this... might shock some of the church people, but I'm like you in I really don't care what they think. What's a little ink anyway?

    Hugs - Tiff

  19. I totally have a lizard on my left foot. I mean, it takes up my whole foot. I plan on getting the rest of it around it done, but I'm a wuss and the foot? HURTS.

  20. I'm catching up ...

This is cool! I've got a 20 year old rose on my ... umm ... right breast that is the WORST work I've ever seen, but the sentimental side of me won't touch it.

Thanks for sharing these ... and the stories ...
